This is the long awaited third installment in the Darkness Rising Series, by Ross M. Kitson. In Books I and II we met Emelia, Jem, Hunor, Marthir, Orla and Kervin.
After their escape from Goldoria, Emelia and her companions begin their arduous journey into the swamps of Ssinthor. A land ravaged by ancient sorcery, it is a place of secrets and danger. In fact, the land is in many ways poisonous, and while it affects Kervin, the toxic land affects the druid, Marthir most extremely. Emelia also undergoes a profound change, and the personal stresses between the companions threaten their cohesiveness as much as the evil which surrounds them.
Deep in the mists and unhealthy fogs of Ssinthor, an insane lizardman sorcerer wields the green crystal to devastating effect. As darkness threatens to tear the comrades apart they must somehow challenge the awesome power working against them. It is in Ssinthor that Orla comes into her own, and we see the woman as the honorable warrior she is.
In Artoria far to the west, Aldred and his new comrades travel on a misguided mission to save his cursed father. A chance encounter with a seer throws them into a rash digression from their path, deep into the Emerald Mountains, where a terrible foe awaits. Now Aldred is set on a path, for good or ill, which affects everyone.
All the while, hidden in the secret recesses of a ruined fort, a crystal of blackest sorcery awaits its former master, Vildor, Lord of the Ghasts. Vildor's underlings are legion, and his reach is long.
Kitson's world is fully fleshed in both its history and social structure, but he doesn't fall into the trap of overly descriptive prose. The reader's mind is allowed to absorb the tale, free to imagine the places and the people unimpeded. We are drawn in and live the tale with intensity, feeling a sense of loss when the final pages arrive, and we emerge from the tale only to realize we must now wait until Mr. Kitson has written the next installment in this brilliant fantasy adventure.

Darkness Rising Book 3 Secrets Prism eBook Ross Kitson Ceri Clark Connie Jasperson Reviews
Just when you think that you've gotten comfortable with the set of characters the author has provided, he adeptly adds a few more to the "brew" that makes it even more "tasty". There are multiple plots in this adventure that are slowly, but steadily begining to come together. Which is not to say that the story is slow at all, it is very fast paced....there's just a lot to tell and it's all entertaining. Even as the story advances, the author takes the time to artfully add touches to what we already know about central characters that helps us understand motivations and actions. I very much appreciate his technique for doing so, because it adds intrigue to the books. The author created an expansive world, but one that seems comfortable for my meager imagination, the locales are varied, but I'm not having trouble remembering them and what's special about each. In this third installment, the author has added additional intellectually humorous verbal exchanges between the characters that are just fun. He seems to be enjoying the creation of this work, because it's clear that he's not taking shortcuts to get to the end. Highly recommend.
The Darkness Rising series keeps getting better as we wade further in to the landscape with the characters, for several reasons.
First, there are the characters themselves. Emelia is one of my favorites; as the female lead she is strong without being passionless and has just the "right amount of awkward." She wields powers that are increasing and morphing as she continues on her quest. What truly fascinated me, however, was the influence of the evil Vildor, who infiltrates Emelia's mind - who compels and attracts her as much as he repels her. I'm always up for a good villain, and Kitson has created a masterpiece with Vildor.
But the other story arcs are amazing as well. Marthir is one of the most original creations in any fantasy. A druid in the making, her wild side has always been apparent. Now it emerges even further during animalistic rituals on her own journey.
Add in the romantic tension between Emelia, Jem, and Kervin, as well as the quest (now coalescing after the previous two books) and Secrets becomes a tour de force.
Kitson has obviously sweated blood to create his world within these books. His stories are faultlessly detailed, with flashes of his own medical background making the entire series soar. The writer is patient, allowing the quests to slowly intersect and become a driving, pounding excitement, making me read and read far past my bedtime.
He illuminates the novel with compelling images The dark mirror of Eeria, the bald Air-Mages, dead goblins, lizardmen... However, these all have definite places within the ornate plot, and each serves a purpose.
If you enjoy rich, faultless fantasy I highly recommend the Darkness Rising series, and Secrets - which can be read as a standalone.
